The great Maria Callas photographed by Cecil Beaton.

Have written before how I am receiving an education on American folk & country music πŸ™‚Β  (which is very interesting) but I am also educating in return with jazz and, but of course, opera.

Asked to nominate my favourite piece is difficult but O Mio Babbino Caro is one I play over and over. Each time brings tears to my eyes.

What a singer and a true citizen of the world! Born in New York, educated in Greece and discovered in Italy.

My Nonna tells me that people wept in the streets of Roma when they heard La Divina had died at only 53 years old!

Maria Callas in 1959. Callas of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. She combined an impressive bel canto technique, a wide-ranging voice and great dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.
