   It does look an interesting and useful position though for those who favour the paddle.    Hand crafted out a nice wood such as almond or something exotic or rare such as spalted hawthorn, they can also be very elegant – I do make the best wooden paddles in the world … well possibly [There's modest for you!] After four or five hours hand crafting, when you’ve got the curves are just right and the grain flows into and round the bevelled edges; it’s much more a work of art than the £15 made in PRC purely functional internet offerings.

       PS People are probably thinking, ‘Spalted wood, what’s that?’ The following will probably help – “When wood is captured somewhere between the extremes of being completely sound and fully rotten, it can display magnificent beauty. The discoloration, prominent black lines and changes in texture that occur during the decaying process are known to woodworkers as spalting.”
